He left his home at an early age to pursue his dreams in fashion designing. He wrote his NIFT exams while working as a waiter in Goa. His journey for opening a dream fashion store was one filled with hardships. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, a fashion designer based in India today, is followed globally.
Born to a middle class Bengali family, Sabyasachi had a keen interest in handicraft and craftsmanship since childhood. His parents couldn’t support his desire to study in National Institute of Fashion and Technology due to financial difficulties. He ran away from home to work as a waiter in Goa for some time. After graduating from NIFT, Sabyasachi launched his own fashion store with the help of 20,000 rupees borrowed from his sister. It took five years of working day and night for Sabyasachi to make his own mark in the world of fashion.
In 2002, Sabyasachi became the part of Indian Fashion Week. The Women’s Wear Daily proclaimed him as the future of Indian Fashion Technology. He made his international debut with a ‘Grand Winner Award’ at the Mercedes Benz New Asia Fashion week at Singapore in 2003. The year 2006 was a turning point for him. He was invited to present his collection, The Nair Sisters at the Annual Black Tie Charity Dinner Fashion show at the prestigious Oxford University. He also participated in events like New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, Bridal Asia, Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, and Miami Fashion Week. Today, Sabyasachi manufactures unique and exquisite range of fashion wear.
Apart from being an entrepreneur, Sabyasachi is also a social worker. He launched ‘Save the Saree’ Project aimed at helping the weavers in Murshidabad. Sarees priced at Rs 3,500 are sold on a non profit basis and the entire proceedings are given to the weavers. This initiative is supported by Bollywood celebrities like Aishwarya Rai and Vidya Balan.
 
Sabyasachi became a part of Bollywood through Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black. He won the National Award for best costume designer for the movie. Ra One, Pa, Baabul, No One Killed Jessica and English Vinglish are some of the popular movies featuring Sabyasachi‘s label.
 
Sabyasachi designed the wedding outfits for Deepika, Anushka- Kohli, Bipasha Basu, Samantha Akkineni, Vidya Balan and Isha Ambani.
Since the last 15 years, Sabyasachi promote the Indian handloom industry through his designs. Sabyasachi conquered the hearts of people through his  iconic Khadi, cotton and silk handcrafted outfits. His success is credited to his knowledge in entrepreneurship design.
