Zomato, BioD join hands
Online food delivery platform Zomato and bio diesel manufacturer BioD Energy have inked a partnership to produce biodiesel from used cooking oil (UCO). Through the partnership, Zomato and BioD aim at producing biodiesel from used cooking oil collected from restaurants in India. They plan to collect around 1000 tones of UCO from more than 1000 kitchens a month. The produced biodiesel will be then sold to oil manufacturing companies which will blend it with normal diesel. The government had taken this initiative to reduce the wastage of used cooking oils in the country.
India, the biggest consumer of veg oil
According to the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India, India is one among the biggest consumers of vegetable oil. Hence the country has the potential to convert 220 cr litres of UCO to biodiesel by 2022.
Used cooking oil is no more a waste
As a part of the collection drive, BioD will equip Zomato with special bar-coded containers for UCO from QRS brands, hotels and food processors. Zomato will periodically make rounds to pick up the containers and deposit them at a storage unit. When the required quantity of oil is collected, Zomato will transport the containers to BioD’s plant where the used cooking oil will get converted into biodiesel.
Expansion plans
Zomato will begin the project initially in Delhi NCR region and then expand the collection drive by next month to 5 more cities. Online food agitator Zomato currently operates in 24 countries.
