NASA to produce oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere
Last month, NASA’s Perseverance Rover launched ‘Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment’
The experiment, also known as ‘MOXIE’, aims to produce oxygen from Mars’ carbon dioxide-atmosphere
Carbon dioxide makes up ~96% of the gas in Mars’ atmosphere; Oxygen is only 0.13%
Sized like a car battery, MOXIE functions like a tree; it inhales carbon dioxide and exhales oxygen
NASA aims to produce up to 10 grams of oxygen per hour
Inside MOXIE, CO2 is heated up to 1500°F and is split into carbon monoxide and oxygen
Scientists are currently working to figure out the efficiency rate of MOXIE
