യൂണികോൺ വാല്യുവേഷന്റെ പ്രൗഢിയും, മിനുങ്ങുന്ന ഇന്റീരിയറുകളുള്ള ഓഫീസുകളും വെഞ്ച്വർ ക്യാപിറ്റൽ ഗ്ലാമറും ഒക്കെയുള്ള ഇക്കാലത്ത്, ശ്രീധർ വെമ്പു ഒരു റെയർ ബ്രീഡാണ്. ഒരു ടെക് ഫൗണ്ടറുടെ കഥയല്ല ശ്രീധർ വെമ്പുവിന്റേത്, കാലം കേട്ട് പഴകിയ വിജയ കഥകളെ വെല്ലുവിളിച്ച കഥയാണ് ആ മനുഷ്യന്റേത്. ലോക്കൽ എന്ന വാക്കിന്, ഡിക്ഷണറിയിൽ പുതിയ അർത്ഥം എഴുതിയ കോർപ്പറേറ്റ് കഥയാണ് അത്. ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് അഭിമാനിക്കാൻ വകയുണ്ടാക്കിയ മൃദുഭാഷിയായ ഒരു സംരംഭക സന്യാസിയുടെ കഥയാണത്!
തഞ്ചാവൂരിൽ ഒരു മധ്യവർഗ്ഗ കുടുംബത്തിൽ സർക്കാർ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്റെ മകനായി പിറന്നതാണ് വെമ്പു. സാമ്പത്തികമായി അത്ര ശക്തിയിൽ ആയിരുന്നില്ല കുടുംബം, പക്ഷെ തീവ്രമായ പരിശ്രമത്തിലും, ലാളിത്യത്തിലും ജീവിതമൂല്യത്തിലും മുന്നിൽ നിന്ന്, സമ്പത്തിലെ കുറവ് പരിഹരിക്കാൻ കുട്ടിക്കാലം മുതലേ വെമ്പു ശ്രമിച്ചു. പഠനകാലം മുതലേ മാത്തമാറ്റിക്സിൽ മിടുക്കനായിരുന്നു. മദ്രാസ് IIT-യിൽ നിന്ന് ഗ്രാജുവേഷൻ കഴിഞ്ഞ്, മാർക്കിന്റെ ബലത്തിൽ ന്യൂജഴ്സിയിലെ പ്രിൻസ്റ്റൺ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിൽ എത്തി മാസ്റ്റേഴ്സും പിച്ച്ഡിയും എടുത്തു. എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിൽ മികവുള്ള വെമ്പുവിന് ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച കമ്പനികളിലൊന്നായ ക്വാൽകോ-മിൽ ജോലികിട്ടി. അമേരിക്കയാണ്! 1990-കളാണ്, ഏതൊരാളും ജീവിതം സെറ്റിൽ ചെയ്യാനാഗ്രിക്കുന്ന അമേരിക്കയിൽ, ആ മികവുറ്റ ഐടി തൊഴിലിൽ പക്ഷെ ശ്രീധർ വെമ്പുവിന് സുഖം കണ്ടെത്താൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.
1996-ൽ പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് മൂലധനമൊന്നുമില്ലാതെ, ഫാൻസിയായ ഇൻവെസ്റ്റർ പിച്ച് ഡെക്കുകളില്ലാതെ സഹോദരനും ചില സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾക്കുമൊപ്പം കാലിഫോർണിയയിൽ വെമ്പു AdventNet സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ടെലികോം കമ്പനികൾക്ക് നെറ്റ് വർക്ക് മാനേജ്മെന്റ് സോഫ്റ്റ് വെയറുകൾ നിർമ്മിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ലക്ഷ്യം! പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച പോലെ കാര്യങ്ങൾ പോയില്ല. എല്ലാ സംരംഭത്തിന്റേയും തുടക്കം പോലെ നന്നായി സ്ട്രഗിള് ചെയ്തു. രാത്രിയും പകലും ജോലി ചെയ്തും, ഓഫീസിലെ ഫ്ലോറിൽ കിടന്നുറങ്ങിയും അങ്ങനെ മുന്നോട്ട് പോയി. പതിയെ പതിയെ ഉപഭോക്താക്കൾ AdventNet-നെ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി. ആ സമയമാണ് ഡോട്ട് കോം ബബിൾ പൊട്ടിയത്. അതായത് ഇന്റർനെറ്റ് അധിഷ്ഠിത സംരംഭങ്ങൾക്ക് 90-കളുടെ ആദ്യ സമയം വലിയ തിരിച്ചടി കിട്ടി. പല വലിയ കമ്പനികളും സ്റ്റാർട്ടപ്പുകളും തലകുത്തി വീണു. ആ സമയം ശ്രീധർ വെമ്പു, ഫൂച്ചർ സാധ്യത കണ്ടു! ബിസിനസ്സുകൾ പലതും വരുന്നു, അവയ്ക്ക് ക്ലൗഡ് ബേസ് ചെയ്ത സോഫ്റ്റ് വെറുകൾ വേണം! അങ്ങനെ സോഹോ പിറന്നു! നിക്ഷേപകരില്ല, എയ്ഞ്ചൽ ഇൻവെസ്റ്റേഴ്സില്ല, ഹെഡ് ലൈനുകളില്ല, ഒരു ഹൈപ്പും ഇല്ല! കോഡ് ചെയ്യാൻ തലച്ചോറും അത് കീബോർഡിലേക്ക് പകരാൻ കൈകളും പിന്നെ സമുദ്രം പോലെ ആത്മവിശ്വാസവും.. അത് മതിയായിരുന്നു സോഹോ-യ്ക്ക്! പിറക്കാനും പിച്ചവെയ്ക്കാനും. അങ്ങനെ 2000 എത്തി. എല്ലാവരും വെൻച്വർ ക്യാപിറ്റലുകളുടെ പുറകേ പോകുന്ന സമയം, ശ്രീധർ വെമ്പു പറഞ്ഞു- നോ! സോഹോ, ഒരു നിക്ഷേപകന്റേയും പിന്നാലെ പോയില്ല! എന്തായിരുന്നു കാരണം? വെമ്പുവിന് വ്യക്തമായ മറുപടി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മറ്റൊരാളുടെ ഫണ്ട് വാങ്ങിയാൽ അവർക്ക് വേണ്ടിയാണ് നിങ്ങൾ പണിയെടുക്കുന്നത്. നിക്ഷേപകരെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്താനല്ല പ്രൊഡക്റ്റ് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. അതിന് ചില അർത്ഥങ്ങൾ വേണം. 25 വർഷം മുമ്പ്, വിജയിക്കുന്നത് പോയിട്ട് നിലനിൽക്കുമോ എന്ന് പോലും ഉറപ്പില്ലാത്ത കാലത്ത് ഒരാൾക്ക് ഫണ്ട് എടുക്കേണ്ട എന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കാൻ പറ്റുമെങ്കിൽ അത് ശ്രീധർ വെമ്പുവിന് മാത്രമായിരിക്കണം.
