We are what we eat, goes the adage. Our food habits say how healthy we are. This is not just a long-held belief, but a scientifically proven fact. It’s not the price we pay for food that matters but its quality. This is the point Anil Kumar, founder of Swad Foods, is trying to drive home. And by doing this, he is ensuring the continuation of a culture which attaches sacredness to whatever is eaten.
Pesticide-free paddy is procured from the kole fields of Thrissur, Alappuzha and Palakkad districts. Rice is milled and packed at Swad Foods’ state-of-the-art factory in Palakkad without human interference. With the help of modern buller (OR BUHLER manufactured?) machinery, rice can be milled and bran retained as preset.
The venture, launched in 2000, now supplies over 70 products with exports to foreign countries.
Interestingly, Anil picked women from the locality to serve in his company. He has two reasons for this.
In addition to matta rice, fibre-rich Adatt Plus matta rice, sharbati atta, roasted rava, Rajasthan organic roasted rava, rice flour, idli podi, puttu podi, high-quality bency rava, and roasted rice powder are exported to international markets.
Anil says Swad Foods sells the same export quality products in the domestic market as well.
‘Swad,’ as a term, is used to refer to the supreme attribute of a food item, which is taste. The expression itself is tempting. And Anil struck a different note when he chose to make the term his brand name.
The food industry is lucrative as well as challenging at the same time. ‘Good food is good medicine’ is the motto that guides Swad Foods. Delivering under this concept has always been a big responsibility.
Swad Foods seeks to provide people with pesticide-free red rice. Anil sources paddy from farmers paying them handsomely. This way he helps the agri sector, too.
This entrepreneur’s note of caution that ‘never go for cost but quality’ is aimed at creating a healthier tomorrow.
