Engineering students develop assisted driving mechanism to help handicapped people drive and earn

Junior students take over a project idea proposed by their seniors, as instructed by their professor. They make a product out of the idea and launch a startup. This happened at the Mohandas College of Engineering and Technology, Trivandrum. B.Tech students Vishnu M, Krishnadas S, Azhar Mohammed, Gokul B and Vishnu GL are leading the startup called Heylyx Humboldt.

More than a B.Tech project, the founders of Heylyx Humboldt aim to drive a social change and transform lives. Towards that cause, they designed and developed a product, Assistive Driving Mechanism for Rickshaw, for the differently abled community. This product can be implemented in two-wheelers as well as three-wheeler vehicles. Those who have no hands can control the vehicle completely with the help of their legs. The product, if customized, can be used by people having no legs and even commoners.

The students say they realized the difficulties faced by the handicapped community when they engaged with people to research their product. This realization led to the development of a product which can help the handicapped community travel without depending on others. Heylyx Humboldt’s product can aid them to earn a living.

The mechanism was first tested on a scooter. Later, they have implemented the project on an auto rickshaw. Founders say that depending on the purpose, this mechanism can be used in any vehicle.

Prof. Pradeep Raj, IEDC Coordinator, supported the students to launch the project. Their project was awarded first prize in three competitions.

The students say they are obliged to the college Principal, Director, and faculty members who have given maximum support to their innovation. They are now looking forward to commercializing their product through government assistance including subsidies.
