The coronavirus and resultant lockdown have reminded the world that hunger is religion and god is food. At a time when all sectors have fallen, Nanma trust, led by I.G P. Vijayan, and Kerala Police are trying to feed the needy. On the onset of the lockdown itself, they have decided that not a single person should go hungry. Today, through the initiative Oru Vayaroottam, Oru Vishappakattaam ’, they distribute food to hundreds of people.
Many including those who live on the streets, depend upon daily wages and stuck in various places due to the lockdown have benefitted from the initiative. On the first day of lockdown, Upma packages were distributed to 40 people in Thiruvananthapuram city. The following day, 100 people were provided with meals. Gradually, the service expanded from district to district.
Currently, the initiative Oru Vayaroottam, Oru Vishappakattaam provides meals to over 20,000 people. The total number of food packages delivered in 40 days is over four lakhs! In most districts, food is being cooked at specially arranged kitchens located on buildings given by generous minds.
During this period of social distancing, Oru Vayaroottam, Oru Vishappakattaam initiative shows the compassion of minds. The act of catering to the needs of the destitute is a reminder that unity, love and care are the priceless virtues that constitute life.
