Kamala Harris, daughter of Indian descent in the US, will be the Vice Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, signaling a new relationship between the US and India. Presidential candidate Joe Biden has nominated California Senator Kamala to run for vice president. Joe Biden said he had nominated one of the best public figures in the country for the vice president candidature.

Kamala, 55, is the first Asian American to run for the US presidential election. Kamala’s mother Shyamala Gopalan hails from Chennai. She came to the United States in the 1960s to work in cancer research. His father is Donald Harris of Jamaican descent. Kamala was born in Auckland, California. After graduating from Howard University and the University of California, Kamala began her career in the Almeida County District Attorney’s Office. In 2010, she became California’s attorney general. Following the extremist crackdown on criminals, Kamala came under criticism from progressives. She became senator of California in 2016. Kamala was the first Asian-American to reach this position. Kamala’s stance on health sector reforms and immigration issues has been remarkable. She also took root in American national politics through her strong stance against the Trump administration during Senate meetings. She announced her candidacy in the first round of the 2020 presidential election and later on, backed Joe Biden.

Kamala Harris is the third woman to run for the US Vice Presidential nomination. President Donald Trump has welcomed Kamala’s candidacy with criticism.

In interviews, Kamala talked about her grandfather P.V Gopalan, who was a part of India’s freedom movement. his influence in cultivating a sensitive political consciousness and Indian heritage. Kamala contesting for vice presidency is a moment for every Indian to take pride at. Kamala’s candidacy may also have been influenced by the black rights movement that erupted in the United States following the demise of George Floyd. The fact that someone from a black background is coming to the leadership after Barack Obama also adds to the relevance of Kamala’s candidacy.
