Govt to lift the ban on onion exports from January 1
The ban came into effect in September to contain the spike in domestic prices
Later on, the ban was eased for high-end varieties whereas it remained for common varieties
The surge in prices was caused by the massive destruction of crops in various states
Around 40% of the onion crop is produced in the Kharif season, which is not usually stored.
