The Department of Telecommunications has introduced a facility to detect all numbers in their own name and remove unauthorized SIMs for those with multiple mobile numbers. The portal tafcop.dgtelecom.gov.in has been launched by the DoT with the aim to prevent the taking of mobile SIM cards for illegal purposes.

The move comes in the wake of an increase in cases of fake SIMs being leaked without the knowledge of the owner. The portal will help number holders to find and avoid numbers that are not actually used. It is now easy to find out how many mobile numbers are actively used in the name of any person through the portal. Users can check if someone is using a mobile number in their name without their knowledge.
The site helps people identify the number of mobile connections provided in their name. Originally unused numbers can also be blocked. The user can avail the portal service through OTP using the phone number in use. The Department of Telecom will provide information about the numbers in the names of the users via SMS. Users can visit the portal and report numbers they no longer use or need.
Telecom service providers will block or deactivate numbers that the user does not need. The portal also has a facility for customers to track the progress of complaints. The number of mobile connections that individuals can hold in the country was limited to nine. However, the department has noticed that more than nine mobile connections are working on behalf of some users. In the first phase, the portal service will be available to users in the region, which includes Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The operation will be gradually extended to other telecom circles. Unauthorized SIM cards are being used in treason and anti-women propaganda cases in the country.
