Having received the ‘Nari Shakti’ award, India’s highest civilian award for women, from President Ram Nath Kovind, the 98 year old Karthyayini Amma from Cheppadu, is on cloud nine.
Karthiyanamyamma, who passed the Literacy Mission’s literacy test in August 2018 with flying colours, is preparing to write the fourth class equivalent exam in December this year. She is the goodwill ambassador of Commonwealth Learning that includes 53 countries.
Karthyayini amma worked as a cleaner in temples at Mavelikkara and Harippadu till the age 90. When people of same age as her are suffering from ailments, Karthyayani Amma is pursuing new heights in education. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that by reminding us that age is just a number and not an obstacle to enter the world of knowledge, Karthyayani Amma is setting up a good example.
