DoT to transform India into a manufacturing, export hub of 5G equipment. A meeting is scheduled today with key stakeholders to roll out PLI scheme for the same. Global telecom gear makers like Nokia, Ericcsson and Huawei will benefit from it. The PLI scheme offers an incentive of 4-6 % for manufacturers for 5 years. The scheme is likely to reduce cost disadvantages faced by manufacturers in India.
Google announces a new safety feature for Pixel smartphones. The new tool is to ensure that users are safe while out alone. Users can set check-in time for a particular destination in the app. Once the time comes, the app will run a full-on security check and ask for status. If there is no response within a minute, the app will alert all emergency contacts . The app will also deliver the location to contacts in case of emergencies.

The mobile app that helps to clear Chinese apps from the phone has got 1 million downloads within a matter of a few hours. Jaipur-based startup OneTouchAppLabs came up with the app ‘Remove China Apps’ to help one detect and delete Chinese apps on the mobile phone. Tata Sons partners with Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Covid-19 test kits. Kits will be based on RT-LAMP technology. RT-LAMP is a futuristic technology that can be adapted for point-of-care setting. The test uses an isothermal set-up to create copies of viral DNA for detection. SCTIMST got approval for plasma therapy from ICMR last month.

India approves emergency use of remdesivir for Covid-19 treatment. Remdesivir is an antiviral drug developed by Gilead Sciences Inc. Remdesivir is the first drug to show improvement in COVID-19 patients in formal clinical trials. U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization for the drug last month. DCGI approved emergency use of remdesivir limiting to five dose.

ByteDance to set up a second corporate entity in India. The new entity will provide IT-enabled support to all ByteDance platforms. TikTok India and Helo India will benefit from the initiative. ByteDance India Service Ltd currently operates with 500 staff. ByteDance also has 15 R&D centres across the globe.
