With startups gaining more prominence by day, India covets yet another milestone with respect to startup ecosystems. As per the Hurun Global Unicorn List 2019, India has emerged as the third largest ecosystem for successful startups. India overtook Israel and U.K, two of the global powers to gain this position. India is just behind China and USA who holds the first and second positions respectively.
Indian is rich having 21 unicorn startups shining bright. Payment solutions platform One97 Communications is the most valuable firm with an estimate of $10 Bn. Also leading the list are cab aggregator Ola Cabs and online educator Byjus with $6 Bn each, and travel-stay finder OYO Rooms with approximately $5 Bn in value. Together, the 21 Unicorns create over $80 Bn value. India is targeting to mint 100 unicorn startups by 2025.
In the global context, Silicon Valley hosts 21% of the world’s unicorn startups. According to Hurun research findings, there are 494 unicorn startups across 118 cities in the world. Beijing city hosts 82 unicorns which is the highest for a city. China overtook USA by 3 unicorns and stands at 206. Together, China and USA accounts for over 80% of the world’s unicorns.
