‘Start your business from home with zero investment’ – goes the tagline of Meesho. Claimed to be the No:1 reselling brand in India, Meesho has already introduced 1 crore retailers online. Most of them now earn above Rs 25,000 monthly through Meesho. This indigenous social commerce platform was founded by IIT Delhi graduates Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal. In India, Meesho helps small and medium enterprises open digital stores.
The name Meesho is derived from the concept of ‘Meri Shop, a platform that let physical stores to sell via online’. In 2016, Meesho was selected by the American seed accelerator Y Combinator, considering its contributions in solving real Indian problems. It also got selected in the first batch of Google Launchpad. Meesho provided opportunities not only for SMEs but for individuals too to digitally exhibit inventories of their physical stores. This encouraged Facebook to invest in the startup.
Although many sites connect entrepreneurs and customers through social networking platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, Meesho is different. It recognised the potential of the rural sector and linked small-time entrepreneurs. That made Meesho the favourite of investors and clients.
