Twitter loses its safe harbour immunity for not fully complying with IT Rules

The new rules require significant social media intermediaries to appoint Indian resident officers on certain positions

Those with above 5 Mn users should appoint a chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer

Non-compliance with the digital rules would result in these platforms losing the intermediary status

Intermediary status provides immunity from liabilities over any third-party data hosted by the platforms

So far, Facebook, Google and Instagram have submitted their report in compliance with new rules

However, Twitter is yet to submit the report

This led to Twitter losing its legal shield as an intermediary in India

Now, Twitter will be liable for users posting any unlawful content
