Anyone who has watched Terminator has surely wondered what would happen if we allowed technology development to go too far and merged with human beings. Well, Elon Musk, an entrepreneur, has turned that dream into a reality. Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink has come up with a unique technology which aims to create a symbiosis between humans and AI. Neuralink has announced its plans to implant minuscule electrodes into the human brains. These electrodes are capable of recognizing various kinds of brain diseases. It also helps people affected with paralysis to control their artificial limbs, computers and smartphones. Neuralink is aiming to recognize and treat different kinds of brain or spine-related disorders.

Neurosurgical robots will implant groups of minuscule flexible electrode threads into the brain. Each electrode group is encased inside a small implantable device that contains wireless chips, which are four millimeters long. Implants can be connected to external devices with the help of a wearable device. Implants can hence be controlled by a smartphone and fix bugs via Bluetooth, without tampering the chip.
The firm is currently developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces including a wireless connection abled sensor, N1. The device when embedded onto the brain, would communicate to a hearing-aid like a device behind the ear.

Elon Musk aims to achieve a symbiosis with AI through the venture. “This [effectively merging with AI] is not a mandatory thing! This is a thing that you can choose to have if you want. I think this is going to be something really important at a civilization-scale level. I’ve said a lot about A.I. over the years, but I think even in a benign A.I. scenario we will be left behind,” Elon said during the launch event.
